The current Scottish Premier League champions lodged legal papers signalling their intention to enter administration with the Court of Session in Edinburgh at lunchtime.
It is believed Rangers now have five days in which to declare formally that administrators have taken over the running of the club.

If administration is confirmed it will result in Rangers being docked 10 league points, which would put them 14 points behind the current leaders Celtic - almost certainly ruling them out of retaining the championship.
It would also lead to an embargo on player transfers and the club's top players could be sold on at the next transfer window.

Other players could be made redundant or asked to take pay cuts.
The firm prospect of administration will come as no surprise to Rangers fans or the rest of Scottish football.
The Ibrox club is awaiting the verdict of a tax tribunal which could cost it around £49million.
Problems: The owner of Glasgow Rangers Craig Whyte will be facing a difficult week
Concerns: Last week former Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston revealed he had asked the Government's Insolvency Service to clarify 'certain financial arrangements' relating to the takeover of the club
Difficult days: Former Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston, right, has raised concerns about the takeover of the club by owner Craig Whyte, left
The HMRC case centres around the use of employee benefits trusts (EBTs) which were in place before Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray last May.
The tribunal verdict is imminent but it looks like the club has pre-empted any decision.
Mr Whyte, who bought Sir David's shares for £1 and pledged to pay off £18million of debt to Lloyds Banking Group, has seen his short tenure shrouded in controversy.
Last week former Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston revealed he had asked the Government's Insolvency Service to clarify 'certain financial arrangements' relating to the takeover of the club.
Mr Whyte had earlier admitted securing funds from loan company Tickets in lieu of future season ticket sales.
Mr Johnston told the BBC: 'Rangers' stakeholders are now demanding full transparency.
'I have had numerous approaches following the recent revelations in the press about the acquisition of Rangers Football Club and the use of future season ticket money.

'I am not in a position to answer all the questions put to me, but I do recognise the issue is causing much concern.
'I believe this is a prevalent view amongst Rangers' stakeholders who are now demanding full transparency about the funding of the acquisition of the club, its current financial status, and most importantly, the way forward.'
Earlier this month, Mr Whyte admitted Rangers could be about to face the 'toughest few weeks' in the club’s history.
Manager Ally McCoist said that, because of the club’s finances, the welfare of Rangers was presently more important than results on the park.
A Scottish Premier League spokesman has confirmed that a 10-point deduction and a transfer embargo would only be put in place when administration was confirmed.
The spokesman said: 'At this point in time Rangers are not in administration and we await developments.
'The instant that they are technically in administration there will be an automatic 10-point deduction and, perhaps of less relevance, an embargo on player registrations.
'If administration is confirmed, as we have done previously, we would be looking to work with the administrators and would be looking for a very early meeting.'
Despite the fact that papers have been lodged with Scotland’s highest civil court, it is understood that there is no requirement for a court hearing to be held.

Regardless, I can not bring myself to support Dynamos, I hate them with a passion and rationalise by knowing the vast majority of Highlanders fans are good people despite being Shona. If we followed your logic nobody would support the game we love bro.

In BF you must not/can not support Bosso in Shona. Thats just not on. Highlanders is the identity of Matebeleland... The very fact thet clubs are based where they are is the lines that divide the spporters.

Bosso has always been a Southern Zim team (Matland and Midlands), while Dembare has always been Mash and Manicaland. It is different because Mujamba had nothing to do with Catholism versus the establishment and was discriminated not because he is a Celtic fan, but purely on his skin color.

Mate you dont know what you are talking about. The Celtic- Rangers rivalry extends far beyond football to politics, religion etc. My brother in law hates football but he has everything Celtic, even dresses his 1 year old son in full Celtic regalia. Not because he loves the team per se but he says he is sending a message. "love protestants, love the queen" and all that. Celtic teenagers will have I.R. A posters in their bedroom while Rangers ones will have UVF, UDF paramilitary posters and so on.
I could have been a Protestant, a supporter of the monarch, how would those Rangers have known. Point is they dont care, Rangers fans wave the British flag (Celtic fans usually fly Irish flag) and if you know what that means race wise (out with immigrants, god save the queen etc), case closed. There is a village called Armadale here few miles from me, that is a no go area for Celtic fans and on match day Celtic fan buses on way to the game get police escort when they pass through there, now you walk into a pub there and you will see when its Rangers vs Celtic
Like i said it extends far beyond football. Come summer time and its marching season, when the Orange Order do their marches, they will be flying British flags and the men and boys cheering on will be wearing their Glasgow Rangers tops. Celtic fans will be shouting abuse at them and taunting them and again police have to be there for the march otherwise it kicks off. Serious Rangers fans are also members of the Orange Lodge. Funny story i had a scottish weekend special, she was brought up a die hard Rangers fan and was even a treasurer in the Orange Lodge but girls will be girls and follow their hearts and she took a liking to me. In her words her "dad doesnt like coloured folks and he is going to kill me if this gets out". One day we in her house drinking and my mate was also over and out the blue her dad just walked in. He just stood there, looked at her and me and walked ut not a word

I absolutely get what you mean Kachere. Sometimes we are quick to jump into supporting foreign teams without really knowing what they stand for to their fans

She told me back in the day, protestants, rangers fans, loyalist hooligans or however they chose to identify themselves on the day would go door to door hunting for phinions(sp)or Catholics if like, if unsure they would place the burden of proof upon you and ask you to prove otherwise.
And when they reached her house and asked... "are you catholic or protestant?", she went "am neither", then she says they went "oh! so what are you then you must be something?" and when they heard she was Jewish... they went "are you Jewish protestant or Jewish catholic then?"
