Wholesale adoration of an ashamed ZANU sympathizer. To me his alliagance to ZANU far outweighs his musical contributions. People were getting killed for belonging to the opposition while Mr. Brown was belting pro ZANU tunes.
I know where you are coming from but I'd rather blame zanoo poof more for threatening the lives of artists so in the end people like Andy 'sold out'. I knew Andy from a long time ago (I have personal info I cannot share here about Ilanga as I knew all of these guys- Don married a girl I knew very well from back in Mzilikazi, Sis Busi was a real talent, Keith was great on keyboards, etc, etc: I once attended their rehearsal before a gig at the then rainbow 7Arts theatre in Abercorn Street which later became Jason Moyo, and believe you me, these guys were not zanoo poof: that Andy ended up that was him simply taking advantage of zanoo poof's patronage system, nothing more).
That album 'Silver and Gold' was probably the best LP ever to come out of Zimbabwe- Tshisa Langa, Do you remember dancing by the firelight (my personal faves), True love, etc... what a group, and what talent. Indeed, the problems of the group were simply because you had two bulls in the kraal: Don wanted to keep the music Ndebele and target the wider South African market, while Andy wanted to target Mashonaland and the north of Zimbabwe, especially in the wake of Zairean music with people like Pepe kalle, etc. In addition to that, both Dn and Andy were very adept with their bass and leasd guitar riffs, respectively. I remeber howJob of Job's combination got upset at these guys for letting tribalism, egoism, etc get in the way of their talent and Don finally went his way and died in South africa, where he had wanted his music to go.
And now it's Andy, dying in Harare, also where he had wanted his music to go.
Whether he died of AIDS is neither here nor there- he could have died of a car accident and it would have been the same: the loss of a great musical talent at an early age. Condolences to all who share and feel this loss
