Warriors book place in Quarter Finals

Saturday, 05 December 2009 20:28

ZIMBABWE booked a berth in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Orange CECAFA Senior Challenge tournament after a two-all draw against Rwanda at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi Kenya yesterday. Rwanda topped Group B with seven points with Zimbabwe on second spot with five points.

Zimbabwe play Uganda on Tuesday in the quarterfinals while Rwanda take on Ethiopia the same day.
Tomorrow Zanzibar date Kenya while Zambia lock horns with Tanzania.

This year’s tournament is the 33rd edition of the CECAFA Cup football tournament that involves teams from East and Central Africa.

Zimbabwe and Zambia were invited into this year’s tourney by virtue of their performance in the just-ended Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup. Zimbabwe outplayed Zambia 3-1 in the finals.

Zimbabwe’s developmental side which is composed mostly of Under-23 players drew their first match nil-all against Eritrea on Monday and chalked a 2-0 win over Somalia on Thursday.

If Zimbabwe wins the tournament, it will be their second time having won the 1985 edition at Rufaro Stadium.

Warriors’ coach Norman Mapeza’s assembled side mostly of locally-based players has defied the odds to last the distance after haphazard preparations for the tournament.
